Director Milos Forman’s film adaptation of the popular Broadway musical HAIR tells the story of two young men against the backdrop of the hippie counterculture of the Vietnam era. On his way to enlist in the U.S. Army, Oklahoma farm hand Claude Bukowski (John Savage) heads to New York City, where he meets up with a freewheeling group of Central Park hippies led by the irrepressible George Berger (Treat Williams). When the unlikely friends meet upper-middle-class debutante Sheila Franklin (Beverly D'Angelo), sparks fly between the country boy and the city girl, and Berger's troupe attempts to keep the young lovers together. The outstanding musical numbers were choreographed by Twyla Tharp and sung by vocalists like Ellen Foley, Ronnie Dyson, Nell Carter and Melba Moore. The film was nominated for two Golden Globe Awards (Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy and New Star of the Year in a Motion Picture – Treat Williams), and also received a nomination for Best Foreign Film at the 1980 César Awards. The cast includes Beverly D’Angelo, John Savage, Annie Golden, Donnie Dacus and Dorsey Wright.
