2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY is a landmark 1968 epic sci-fi film produced and directed by Stanley Kubrick, which pushed the limits of narrative and special effects. The film, which follows a voyage to Jupiter by astronauts Dave Bowman (Keir Dullea) and Frank Poole (Gary Lockwood) aboard the spaceship Discovery equipped with the sentient HAL 9000 computer, deals with themes of human evolution, technology, artificial intelligence, and the possibility of the existence of extraterrestrial life. The film is noted for its scientifically accurate depiction of spaceflight, pioneering special effects, and ambiguous imagery. Sound and dialogue are used sparingly and often in place of traditional cinematic and narrative techniques, and the film is also famous for employing a number of pieces of classical music. Despite some initial critical reservations, 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY became one of the most popular films of 1968. Provocatively billed as "the ultimate trip," the film quickly caught on with a counterculture youth audience open to a contemplative viewing experience.
