Cult Classics: ERASERHEAD (1977)

DIRECTED BY: David Lynch

STARRING: Jack Nance, Charlotte Stewart, Allan Joseph, Jeanne Bates, Judith Anna Roberts

ERASERHEAD defies conventional logic and storytelling, fueled by its dark nightmarish atmosphere and compellingly disturbing visuals. The title character Henry Spencer tries to survive his industrial environment, his angry girlfriend, and the unbearable screams of his newly born mutant child. Shot in black and white, ERASERHEAD is director David Lynch’s first feature-length film. Produced during a one-and-a-half-year period while Lynch was a student at the American Film Institute, the film launched him as a major new talent admired by cinephiles and filmmakers all over the world. It stands today as a milestone in personal, independent filmmaking. The intricate sound design is a technical highlight of the film. In 2004, the film was preserved in the National Film Registry by the United States Library of Congress.
