College Scholarship Essay Question WHY FILM MATTERS
The contemporary world is complicated and challenging: poverty, natural disaster, war, religious differences, famine, drought, pollution and disease affect our entire planet to varying degrees and with often devastating results. There are many ways that we can work to make this world a better place. One of these ways is by telling stories, and one of the most vibrant and vital storytelling platforms that we have available to us today is film. Film crosses barriers to bring stories to people across the world: barriers of language, religion and culture, even barriers of literacy itself, as film is available to all people, no matter their levels of education. Films make us think and, in the best cases, change us forever for having seen them.
In 500-750 words, please discuss a film released in 2010 or 2011 that you believe has relevance. It may be a feature film or documentary, American or foreign. Please tell us why you think this particular film matters and why film matters in general. Content of response is more important than length.
You do not need to be a film studies major to enter the contest.
